Legend has it that Hades abducted Persephone and stole her away to the Underworld. Her mother Demeter was so distraught that she forbade the earth from producing any harvest. Zeus was moved by the cries of hungry humans and eventually ordered Hades to return Persephone to her mother, and Hades did so, but not before tricking her. He gave her a pomegranate, and she ate four seeds, compelling her to spend a third of each year in the underworld for the rest of eternity. Winter is said to be Demeter mourning for her lost daughter, before her triumphant return in the spring. 

But we often wondered, what if Persephone wanted to be free from the constraints of society, of eternal maidenhood and springtime? What if ingesting those four seeds was a radical act of stepping into her own power and becoming the dark queen of the underworld?
